Following the quarterfinal win against Turkey, Korea's volleyball fans have been engaging in a social media hashtag campaign with the hashtag #PrayForTurkey, and donating seedlings to help Turkey recover from devastating forest fires.

The Korean women's volleyball team advanced to the semifinals after grabbing a dramatic 17-25, 25-17, 28-26, 18-25, 15-13 victory against Turkey on Wednesday. However, volleyball fans sympathized with Turkish volleyball players as they were seen in tears after the match.

The terms "Turkish athletes" and "Turkey wildfire" trended on Twitter, with many people assuming that the keonhacai were crying because they wanted to win so badly to give strength to their country as large wildfires have erupted across Turkey.

Turkey is battling its worst wildfires in at least a decade. Eight people have died in the blazes since last week. Many villagers have lost property and livestock, while locals and tourists have fled vacation resorts in boats.

Calling Turkey a "brother country of Korea," volleyball fans mobilized their relief efforts by donating to a tree-planting charity and an animal rights federation in Turkey.

One individual tweeted "I was heartbroken to hear the news about the Turkey wildfires. I hope they bring the blaze under control." Another commented, "I know forest soil takes longer to recover from fires, but I hope the forests come back greener."

Many donated under the names of "Team Korea" and "Kim Yeon-koung," captain of the Korean women's volleyball team. Kim has close ties with Turkey as she had played in the Turkish clubs Fenerbahce from 2011 to 2017 and Eczacibasi VitrA from 2018 to 2020.
